SHERIFF J BELL
Born with the unfortunate name Jingle Bell, this leading tenor wisely cast it aside early and now goes by Jay, lest laughter disrupt the cadence of heroics. A native son of Good Measures in Eutopia County Bell was unanimously elected sheriff several years ago—by popular acclaim, providence, or a fortunate change in key, depending on who tells the story. He is, beyond dispute, a remarkable sharpshooter—so remarkable, in fact, that for everyone’s safety (especially his own), he carries but a single silver bullet in his pocket.
Bell is hopelessly in love with Sweet Harmony Goodmeter, the mayor’s daughter, a devotion that underpins nearly every action in his personal score. Artless yet relentlessly optimistic, he moves through life at a bright, unwavering tempo, determined to be everyone’s hero: cheerful, polite, wholesome, and as virtuous as the law allows. Devoted to justice and fearless in spirit, he rises fortissimo when danger strikes—often before he fully recognizes the tune has changed.
No master tactician, Bell can be slow to catch the beat. It frequently takes him a moment to recognize peril, decipher a mystery, or identify his nemesis, Cornelius Sharp, even when Sharp is standing plainly in view. Still, luck seems permanently set in Bell’s favor. Mishaps resolve themselves, fortune returns like a familiar refrain, and against all sensible arrangement, he always saves the day. As the saying goes, Sheriff Bell always gets his man.
Yet for all his courage in the face of bullets, villains, and impossible odds, Bell falters in matters of the heart. Where danger meets him in bold, simple chords, romance arrives softly, pianissimo—and remains the one melody he has yet to learn how to follow.
